There are two types of listings shown in a search engine results window, Organic and Sponsored.

The Organic are free listings, these are normally shown on the left hand side of the window. The search engine decides on the position of each web site according to its own internal algorithms.

The Sponsored Listings, normally shown on the right hand side of the web site and also occasionally above the Organic listings are paid for listings. Companies and people pay to be displayed in the sponsored section, the amount you pay corresponds to your position within the sponsored listings
